Audition requirements
Instrumental
The audition should consist of around forty-five minutes of music, and must include at least three works from different style periods.
Voice
A thirty (30) minute audition is required. The chosen works should include examples of Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary styles. The selections should include the following languages: English, French, Italian and German.
For more information, please contact Professor Ingemar Korjus, coordinator of the vocal sector.
Preparation of an audition DVD
In keeping with professional standards of music performance, applicants are strongly urged to audition in person. Recorded auditions from students living far from Ottawa may be accepted in lieu of a personal audition. A subsequent interview by telephone with members of the School of Music may be required.
Note: Only video auditions, on DVD or USB key, are accepted
The following are general guidelines for the preparation of an audition DVD:
- Choose your repertoire from the requirements listed for your instrument. It is important to adhere to these criteria since different works show different aspects of training and musical development. If you need advice, consult your teacher.
- It is best to get help in making the recording, preferably from a recording engineer. The use of professional equipment will improve your chances of producing a DVD of good technical quality. Record the most difficult works first. If you require an accompanist, it is best to use a professional, preferably one you have used before and with whom you are comfortable.
- All DVDs or USB keys must be clearly marked, titling during the video is also helpful (titles of works, etc.). Otherwise provide clear details along with the DVD or USB key.
- Editing is not permitted.
Accompanists
Students are expected to provide their own accompanist. You may bring your own accompanist or contact one of the following:
