Guitar

Students in the Guitar Sector receive excellent training at both the undergraduate and graduate levels under the leadership of the guitar faculty, all of whom are members of the Canadian Guitar Quartet (in residence at the University of Ottawa). Philip Candelaria, one of the members, regularly visits Ottawa throughout the year to give masterclasses. Other masterclasses, given by guest artists of national and international renown, usually involve collaboration with the Conservatoire de musique de Gatineau and the Ottawa Guitar Society. Various performing opportunities include class concerts (given twice a semester) and participation in public concerts of solo and ensemble works (presented by the Guitar and Baroque Ensembles).

In Residence

Canadian Guitar Quartet

Undergraduate candidates should prepare:

  • two pieces or contrasting movements from a large work, minimum level RCMT Grade VIII or equivalent;
  • technical study;

For graduate candidates, the audition should consist of around forty-five minutes of music, and must include at least three works from different style periods.

To offer complete training in the four year of the BMus and two year of the MMus, scale, arpeggio, slur, tremolo, rasgueado, and other exercises are seen and worked on in class, along side preparation of repertoire for juries and recitals (see detailed requirements, below).

  • One tremolo study (this work may be undertaken in any of the previous years as well)
  • Piece by J.S. Bach
  • One 20th century work
  • One own choice (from a different period)
  • At least one of the above must be a work in movements or be a theme and variations
  • Jury: 20-30 minutes, memorization mandatory
  • A half recital of 35-45 minutes in length, memorization mandatory
  • Must include one concert study and some or all of the Recital requirements for MUS3032 and 4032 (see below)
Full recital (usually in two parts) of approximately 60 minutes
  • Must include one concert study, a concerto (in full or parts) and some or all of the Recital requirements for MUS3032 and 4032 (see below).
A chamber work for guitar or mixed ensemble can be included in the program, of a maximum of approximately 15 minutes.
  • Memorization of the solo guitar material is mandatory (includes the concerto).

    (These requirements may be met in either year, or spread in any proportion between the two.)
  • A full suite or major baroque work
  • A full suite or sonata from an era other than baroque
  • One Canadian work
  • Full recital (usually in two parts) of approximately 60 minutes. A particular theme may be explored in the repertoire, or a varied program may be presented; or a combination of both.
  • Chamber music (for guitar or mixed ensemble) of 15 minutes minimum and 30 minutes maximum.
  • The solo guitar repertoire for both recitals should amount to no less than 60 minutes.

Les Productions d’Oz” New Music for Guitar project was launched in 2009. It is a special partnership between the guitar classes at the University of Ottawa’s School of Music and the Conservatoire de musique de Gatineau, and Les Productions d’Oz, publisher of music for classical guitar.

The full d’Oz catalogue is housed in the Isobel Firestone Music Library, allowing the Conservatoire and uOttawa guitarists easy access to one of the world’s best collections of music for classical guitar. Guitar students electing to include works from this catalogue in their exam or recital programs will be provided by their institution with the means to make a quality recording of these works. These recordings will be published on a Website that will serve as an ever growing archive of reference recordings of the d’Oz catalogue, made exclusively by the uOttawa and Conservatoire guitar students (Website coming soon).

Furthermore, every year, students will be selected to perform in the opening concert of the Alla Grande Guitar Festival; this concert is a yearly showing of new music for guitar.
