Specific sector requirements
Participation in ensemble courses is compulsory for students in the baccalaureate of music program.
Ensembles
MUS3901, MUS3902, MUS3903, MUS3904, MUS3905, MUS3906, MUS3907, MUS3908, MUS 3909, MUS3910, MUS3911, MUS3912, MUS3913, MUS3914, MUS3915, MUS3916, MUS3917, MUS3918.A minimum of 12 credits from the above ensemble courses are required. The courses may be repeated each year. Please refer below for details on the specific requirements for each instrument.
In the performance profile, up to 24 ensemble credits may count toward the program requirements. In other profiles (general, musicology/theory, education, piano pedagogy or composition), a maximum of 18 ensemble credits may count toward the program requirements.
Registration in a choir (MUS3904, MUS3905 or MUS3906) is compulsory for all first- and second-year students with the exception of students registered in Orchestra (MUS3901).
In the Performance profile, you must register in ensemble courses in each of the four years according to the requirements of your instrumental sector. In other profiles, registration in ensemble courses is required in only three of the years.
Participation in ensembles outside the School of Music does not fulfill the ensemble requirements of the program. Only the above courses satisfy your program requirements.
Registration to some ensembles may be conditional upon a successful audition. If you are not selected after the audition, you must withdraw from the course.
Instrumental sector requirements
Winds and Brass
- MUS3904, MUS3905 or MUS3906 for 2 years (normally in the first 2 years of the program);
- MUS3902 for 3 years (4 years in the performance program);
- One ensemble of your choice.
Percussion
- MUS3904, MUS3905 or MUS3906 for 2 years (normally in the first 2 years of the program);
- MUS3902 for 3 years (4 years in the performance program);
- One ensemble of your choice.
Voice
- MUS3904, MUS3905 or MUS3906 for 2 years (normally in the first 2 years of the program);
- MUS3903 for 2 years (normally in the 3rd and 4th year of the program);
- One ensemble of your choice.
All voice majors must audition for MUS3905 (Calixa Lavallée Choir) whether they want to join the ensemble or not.
MUS2346/2746 and MUS3346/3746 are compulsory courses and must be completed within the first 2 years of the program.
Strings
- MUS3901 for 3 years (4 years in the performance program)
Piano
- MUS3904, MUS3905 or MUS3906 for 2 years (normally in the first 2 years of the program);
- MUS3916 for 2 years (normally in the first 2 years of the program);
- MUS3917 for 1 year (normally in third year);
- One ensemble of your choice or MUS3944, MUS3945 or MUS4944.
Guitar
- MUS3904, MUS3905 or MUS3906 for 2 years (normally in the first 2 years of the program);
- MUS3907 for 3 years (4 years in the performance program);
- One ensemble of your choice.
Specific information on courses
MUS2943/3943/4943: Cellists must attend the Thursday courses. Winds, brass and percussion must attend the Friday courses.MUS1990 and MUS2990: Section A is taught in French. Sections B, C and D are taught in English.
